Introducing the Porsche Boxster

By: Darren Williger

The Porsche Boxster and the Boxster S are two very powerful cars and among all the production roadsters in existence, they are the two which handle the best. Both models were brought into the world in 1996 and have remained unchanged except for some changes in horsepower and other changes in the interior options. These cars are perfect examples of what Porsche does with its successful brands. While they undergo changes they retain their look and basic configuration for a long time to come.

The much more powerful version of the Boxster was brought about in 2005 and it is a conservative improvement on the original series as with all Porsche editions.

Like the previous versions of the same model, it has the features: a mid-engine, six-cylinder two-seater that looks like Porsche Spyder. Despite all this, more than half of Boxster's structure and the electronics are taken from the Porsche 911 Carrera.

The Porsche 2005 Boxster looks a lot more exciting and more so than its 2004 version. All this is partly due to the changes in torque as well as the extra 15hp and some extra power which is provided at speeds between 2000rpm and 4000rpm. In terms of performance and acceleration it equals the much more expensive 911 Carrera.

The exhaust of the Porsche Boxster has been modified to make it sound more unique than any other car. The great thing about all this is that both engines are smaller versions of the six-cylinder in the Carrera.

The basic version of the Porsche Boxster is a five-speed manual but there is a better option which offers a six-speed gear. Both of these models also come with a five-speed Tiptronic which is the superb Porsche-designed automatic transmission that began the trend toward manually shifted automatics.

In terms of the bodywork and in terms of the interior, the Porsche Boxster has great quality as well. There is nothing particularly tricky or strictly decorative so it won't be classified as an opulent car. However, the interior of the car is much better than its predecessor, critics called the old version cheap looking and criticized it a great lot solely on looks. The center console as been upgraded with revised switch-gear and titanium look paneling.

The seats of the new Porsche Boxster are much more supportive than the older version which makes them look a lot better. Quite unlike other versions of the roadster, the Boxster has no problems coping with luggage for the long distance. It has two trunks, one of which is a smaller one in the back and one which is very deep in the front hood.

Of all the qualities of the Porsche Boxster one of the best is the powered convertible top which is very easily retractable and launched when needed. The new Porsche Boxster can be used at speeds as much as 30 mph. It also has triple-layer padded cloth tops and a heated glass rear window.

The Porsche Boxster is also called a mid-engine car and the reason is that they six-cylinder is kept behind the seats and just before the rear axle. This means that you can't look under the hood and see your engine. If you do want to see the engine you can do this by removing all the body panels and mechanics do this when they want the engine services. The good thing about all this however is that the engine placed in the center of car for much better weight distribution which makes the car handle properly.
