The Engine of the Porsche Cayenne
By: Darren Williger
Every new vehicle that comes out of the Porsche farm is a redefinition of performance. This is done by trying to create an engine which is more powerful than others in similar categories. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo meets up with all these characteristics. As with all Porsche engines, it is assembled by hand and the twin turbo VB engine embodies a high level of technical excellence.
The Motronic ME7.1.1 is a system which controls the level of precise control and split-second decisions which the Cayenne V8 and V6 super engines are capable of making. This is purely next generation and an intelligent engine management system, it provides power as well as smoothness in the drive. All this to prove that Cayenne's "brain" matches its brawn.
The Motronic system is built to monitor a wide range of sensors and engine components. It looks at the incoming data and compares it for analysis.
It compares streams of data with corresponding reference values and this takes place in a very short amount of time. If any differences are found then the system will adjust certain engine functions such as ignition or fuel injection, to match performance. Other key systems are introduced into Motronic management and they include components like onboard diagnostics and cylinder-specific knock control, with automatic adaptation to any change in fuel quality. Together, all these provide is the best performance regardless of the nature of driving conditions.
The process is purely automatic and properly streamlined in a manner that provides the engine with a great amount of power as well as torque. Another benefit which can be derived is a greater level of fuel economy and lesser emissions when it comes to exhaust issues.
One more function of the Motronic system, is in the management of air inflow into the engine in order to provide the best levels of performance. All this is done by regulating the boost pressure on the vehicle.
Another system which is included in the system of the Cayenne model is the resonance induction system which has a variable-length intake manifold. It is also a very smart concept which makes use of pressure waves which have been created by inlet valves. The reason that this is done is in order to increase the density of the incoming air. This is what increases the amount of energy which is emitted during combustion as well.
Two intake tubes exist and dependent on the speed, the system will make a choice of one of these intake tubes- either the shorter or longer one. The longer tube is utilized at lower speeds in order to maximize the low-end torque. At higher speeds of around 4250 rpm, everything switches to the shorter intake tube so that power output is maximized with a more pronounced throttle response.
Engineers at Porsche Cayenne, were thinking of improving combustion in order to generate much more power with reduced side effects. So what we have with the new engine is greater fuel economy, reduced emissions, less maintenance with a whole lot more power.
